Chevron Parquet predates the 16th century. Like Herringbone, the Chevron pattern was initially used by the Romans who first discovered that arranging bricks inwards facing the traffic, made the roads more stable.  In the 16th century, the Chevron pattern was popular with Francois 1 at the Chateau de Fontainebleau.
